Elevated Nitrogen Deposition to Fire‐Prone Forests Adjacent to Urban and Agricultural Areas, Colorado Front Range, USA

چکیده
As humans increasingly dominate the nitrogen cycle, deposition of reactive (Nr) will continue to have adverse consequences for ecosystems. In Rocky Mountains, Nr remains elevated and has become dominated by ammonium, despite efforts reduce emissions. Currently, spatial models do not fully account urban agricultural emissions, sources that contribute observed high rates ammonium in adjacent To address this gap Colorado Front Range, we measured along a transect from plains subalpine forests. We found values wet at foothill sites (4.7 4.4 kg N ha−1 yr−1, respectively), lower montane (2.5–2.8 yr−1). Ammonium bulk deposition, accounting approximately 69% deposition. Seasonally, was highest spring months, when air masses are transported west into mountains. Previous work demonstrated elevations Range especially sensitive due thin soil minimal vegetation. Our results indicate precipitation, fire-prone forested foothills receive even greater than higher elevations, proximity sources. The interaction between wildfire region may pose risk water supplies ecosystems, is an important topic future research.

Critical Loads for Inorganic Nitrogen Deposition in the Colorado Front Range, Usa
We suggest an empirical approach for determining critical loads for inorganic N deposition in wetfall to the central Rocky Mountains. We define "critical loads" as a deposition amount above which natural resources can be negatively affected. The arithmetic average from 1992 to 1996 of annual inorganic N deposition in wetfall at the eight NADP sites located at elevations greater than 2,500 m in ...
متن کاملColorado Front Range
The term “landscape structure” refers to the configuration of vegetation and other land features over a large land area (usually an extent of many square kilometers). A landscape can be regarded as a mosaic composed of patches of different kinds— for example, different forest types, landforms, or human-built structures such as roads. The scientific discipline of landscape ecology is concerned w...
متن کاملThe Role of Organic Nitrogen in the Nitrogen Cycle of a High-elevation Catchment, Colorado Front Range, Usa
Here we report on three years (1996-1998) of measurements of organic and inorganic nitrogen (N) fluxes to and from Green Lakes Valley, a high-elevation ecosystem in the Colorado Front Range of the Rocky Mountains. Nitrate-N (NO3−N) was the dominant form of N in both precipitation and streamwater. Annual precipitation contained 52% NO3−N, 32% ammonium-N (NH4−N), 9% dissolved organic N (DON), and...
متن کاملClimate Drives Episodic Conifer Establishment after Fire in Dry Ponderosa Pine Forests of the Colorado Front Range, USA
In recent years, warming climate and increased fire activity have raised concern about post-fire recovery of western U.S. forests. We assessed relationships between climate variability and tree establishment after fire in dry ponderosa pine forests of the Colorado Front Range. We harvested and aged over 400 post-fire juvenile ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa) and Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menzies...
